Establishment Purpose

  • The was the "Taipei Broadcasting Station." In 1930, the Communications Department for the Government-General of Taiwan established the Taipei Radio Station at its current location to develop Taiwan's broadcasting industry. In 1931, the Taiwan Broadcasting Association was established and the broadcasting business was transferred to the Association. In 1945, the National Government of the Republic of China took over Taiwan and renamed the Association to "Taiwan Radio." In 1947, the 228 Incident occurred and the Radio Station played an important role in issuing decrees from the KMT, government, military, and civil representatives reporting on the recent developments and handling of the Incident. In 1949, the National Government of the Republic of China retreated to Taiwan and changed the station's name to "Broadcasting Corporation of China." In 1972, the Broadcasting Corporation of China completed the construction of a new building and returned the original building to the Taipei City Government, which became the Taipei City Government Parks and Street Lights Office. In 1996, the building was chosen to be the location of the National 228 Memorial Museum based on its location and historical significance. After the establishment of the Memorial Museum, it commissioned the Taiwan Peace Foundation to manage the Memorial Hall. The Taiwan Development Institute took over management duties on June 1st, 2000 and managed the Memorial Hall until December 31st, 2002. Since January 1st, 2003, the Memorial Hall has been managed directly by the Taipei City Government's Department of Cultural Affairs.
