Due to the rich bamboo resources in Nantou County, bamboo was widely used in daily supplies, food, clothing, transportation, and entertainment. Because of the groves of the fine and jade green Moso bamboo, the Dapingding Area in Linyibu located in the southeast of Nantou County was named Zhushan during the Japanese rule. A bamboo professional processing zone was established in the Yanping area of Zhushan to promote the bamboo industry in 1974. To implement the cultural heritage preservation and maintenance policy and enhance the features of the cultural or historical relics in each county, the Council for Cultural Affairs of the Executive Yuan commissioned professor Jiang Shao-Ying to plan and establish the Bamboo Art Museum in 1987. The inauguration was on May 29, 1988 and the Museum became the first local culture museum launched in the nation. The main purpose of the establishment of the Bamboo Art Museum is to display traditional and contemporary bamboo handicrafts. For example, the bamboo products related to the clothing, food, living, and transportation in the lives of the early agricultural society along with the contemporary bamboo handicrafts and the ecological distribution of bamboo art are all displayed in the museum to represent inheritance and prosperity.
