Department Introduction
The National Palace Museum (NPM) is famous worldwide for its collection of artifacts of Cathay culture from different dynasties previously kept by the Qing court. The collection includes main categories: implements, calligraphy and painting, and books and documentation, totally nearly 700,000 pieces. In recent years, the NPM has proactively collected artefacts of different Asian ethnic groups to expand the coverage of its collection. Based on professional exhibition planning and comprehensive research outcomes, the NMP organizes permanent exhibitions and special exhibitions on different themes every year. It also introduces the essential exhibits of important museums worldwide to broaden the global cultural horizon of the public. The NMP has the northern and southern branches. The North Branch located in Waishuangxi, Shilin District, Taipei City, was established in 1965. In addition to the main museum and the library that are opened to the public, the NMP has built two traditional gardens: Zhishan Garden and Zhide Garden for visitors to travel to. The Southern Branch sitting in Taibao City, Chiayi County, dedicated to exhibiting Asian art culture began operations at the end of 2015. The NMS is the museum at the highest level, with the riches collection, having the most visitors, and earning the best international fame in Taiwan. As a result, it is a must-visit spot in Taiwan and ranked at the top of all tourism indicators.
