Establishment Purpose

• As the first national museum established by the government after coming to Taiwan in 1949, the National Museum of History (NMH), originally named the National Museum of Historical Artifacts and Fine Arts, was founded on December 4, 1955. At the beginning its operation, the NMH could only display specimens, models, and pictures to illustrate Chinese culture. In 1956, the Museum received two lots of Chinese artifacts transferred by the Ministry of Education; these are plundered artifacts returned by Japanese Government. The Museum also received part of the collections of the previous Henan Province Museum (today’s Henan Museum), shipped to Taiwan because of WWII. These artifacts became the core of NMH’s collection. From then on, through governmental transfers, donations and procurement from various sectors, the NMH has accumulated over 60,000 artifacts today, including five pieces of national treasures and 42 sets of important artifacts announced by the Ministry of Culture. The NMH has collected comprehensive artifacts, including the bronze and jade of the Spring and Autumn Period unearthed from Xinzheng and Hui County in Henan Province, Tang tri-color pottery unearthed in Luoyang, and a wide variety of coins and modern and contemporary paintings which highlights the daily life of ordinary people. On February 9, 2007, the Museum was registered as a Taipei City historical building.
