The House of Citizens-Memorial Hall of Attendance was established in 1926 during Japanese rule as a memorial to the visit of the Japanese Crown Prince Hirohito (later known as Emperor Showa) in 1923. Though the Crown Price did not visit the House in person, it is still a monumental location. The functions of the House of Citizens-Memorial Hall of Attendance have changed several times since the Japanese colonial period from the original assembly hall to the office of the public sector and welfare center. Due to the impact of the 921 earthquake in 1999, the structure was severely damaged. After being approved as a historic building by the Review Committee of Historic Sites and Buildings of Yunlin County in 2001, the House was subsidized and restored based on the “Regulations on Subsidy of the Historic Buildings in the Disaster Area of the 921 Earthquake.” The reconstruction work was completed in 2006. The Cultural Affairs Department of Yunlin County outsourced the management rights of the House in 2011 and it was given back to the Douliu City Office in March, 2016. The City Office planned a series of events related to the local living style in Douliu to connect the House with the locals. Currently, the House has become one of the latest attractions for hipsters in Douliu City.
