Establishment Purpose

  • The Taipei Astronomical Museum was set up on Lidong (the start of winter), November 7, 1996; it took over all affairs formerly managed by the Taipei Observatory, and there has been more equipment facilitated in the museum subsequently. On July 20, 1997, the Space Exploration Day, the museum was officially open to the public after the exhibition area ranging from the 1st floor to the 3rd floor was completed for providing Taipei citizens with better services; to make the visitors have an experience beyond the time and space, the museum carefully planned the universe adventure facilities on the 4th floor of exhibition area, which was completed and officially open to the public on July 20, 2002. The spacious space with a lively, friendly design makes the construction look magnificent; along with the landscape design combining leisure and education functions, the museum has become Taipei City's most popular outdoor recreation attraction. The design concept of the Taipei Astronomical Museum incorporates the solid exterior structure with the light-absorbing shade, the theodolite, equatorial sundial, and the appearance of IMAX Dome to make the museum symbolizing the magnificent and mysterious universe and win citizen's recognition for the Taipei Astronomical Museum. In addition to the application of materials and colors that highlight associative perception, the Taipei Astronomical Museum has adopted plant decors as the partition walls that provide a visual guide that increases the diversity and privacy of different spaces. In particular, the IMAX Theater, it's a dome-roofed building with a diameter of 35 meters and covered with golden aluminum cone-shaped panels. Facilitated with the sound and lighting, electro-chemistry (EC) appliance, the vivid scenes will be brought to the visitors for a virtue experience. All spaces, layouts, and equipment in the museum are based on the requirements of leisure and stay, service facilities are everywhere. It's an architecture for modern astronomical education with recreational, entertaining, and educational features. It's hoped that everyone can pay frequent visits to the museum and join the journey of the starry sea and realize the beauty of astronomy.

Department Introduction

Astronomical research and popularity make an important indicator of a country's development momentum and basic science education. The establishment of the museum is to bridge astrology and society as well as connect research and basic education; consequently, people are guided to astronomic knowledge and students are led to astrology researches. The core development mission is to make the museum become "a leading astrology hub".
