Department Introduction

Located at the end of Hukao Old Street facing the faraway San-yuan Temple at the other side of the street, the Old Hukou Catholic Church Cultural Center and the Temple together witnessed the prosperity, downfall, and rebirth of Hukao Old Street in a century. As the first governor of Taiwan, Liu Ming Chuan built the railway and set up the station on Dahukou Street in 1887. The location of the Catholic Church is the same location as the Old Hukou Station (it was also called the Dahukou Freight Station at that time) in the past. The station moved to the present location of the New Hukou Station in 1929 along with the transfer of the political and economic focus. In the meanwhile, the space of the old station was also released. Catholicism grasped the opportunity to enter the Hukou region by transforming the old station into a new Catholic Church. The present Catholic Church was built by the Italian Catholic Father Father Marsecano in 1958 while his parents contributed the expenses. The Church was completed in 1965 and became the center of Catholic belief in the Hukou region. Due to the sharp decline of the church members, the Catholic Church which stood at the end of the street for nearly 30 years ceased activities and closed without opening to the public in 1993. The exterior of the unused Church became dilapidated through time. Standing at the stage at the front door, it is hard to image the grand occasion of the mass in the old days. Because of the efforts made by the enthusiastic residents living on the street, they acquired the approval of the Catholic Church to borrow the Catholic Church free to the community as a location for cultural and educational activities at the end of 2000. They also obtained a subsidy from the Space Redevelopment Plan of the Council for Cultural Affairs to begin the first step for the rebirth of the Catholic Church. Later on, it became the Old Hukou Catholic Church Cultural Center and a favorite resting place of residents.
