Establishment Purpose

• The Memorial Hall of Founding of Yilan Administration was built by the first Minister of Yilan Prefecture, Saigo Kikujiro, during the Japanese Occupation of Taiwan. It was also the residence of the former Premiers, and has witnessed the 200-year administration of history of Yilan. When visitors come here, they should slow down and feel the tranquility of this space. Visitors should go back in time to explore the Old City of Yilan, and experience the exchange between people and history.

Department Introduction

The preservation of this historic building originally began due to former county magistrate Yu Shyikun ordering the preservation of a camphor tree that required 2 people to embrace with wide-open arms. Taking into account that each dynasty obliterates the history of the previous dynasty, it is necessary to understand and review past history. The Japanese Occupation of Taiwan by Japan is a part of Taiwanese History as the county magistrate's residence is an iconic building from the Japanese Occupation era. However, most Japanese-style buildings have all been demolished. Regardless if they can be used to look back into history or something can be learned from these buildings, a lack of such architecture from that era means that people won't be able to look back into that period of history. Therefore, in 1995. County Magistrate Yu Shyikun decided to keep the magistrate's residence and utilize it, renaming it as the "Memorial Hall of Founding of Yilan Administration."
