Establishment Purpose

• From the preparation stage to inauguration on October 29, 2011, the National Museum of Taiwan History (NMTH) has spared no efforts to gather materials relating to Taiwan history since the 16th century across Taiwan and worldwide to develop a macroscopic vision of Taiwan from the global point of view, complete the construction of the online database of various historical sources, and build a platform for sharing the resources of Taiwan history. Permanent exhibitions are arranged based on the topic: Our Land Our People: The Stories of Taiwan to focus on the history regarding the daily life and culture of people in Taiwan and display the culture and lifestyle on this land from the viewpoint its people. After inauguration, the NMTH has been planning special exhibitions based on three main topics: “culture pluralism,” “public history” and “contemporary perspective” and actively launching cooperation with worldwide history museums to enhance the global visibility of Taiwan’s history and culture. Apart from establishing the learning resource center and Taiwan history library to provide the public with comprehensive environments for learning Taiwan history, the NMTH promotes cultural equality and history co-writing and links to schools and social media to turn personal life experience into part of the research and exhibition of Taiwan history. Aiming to become “everybody’s museum” the NMTH is committed to the research and collection of the historical and cultural assets of Taiwan, the construction of a Taiwan history with commoners as the subject matter, and promotion of civic participation in history construction and disabled experience projects. By researching Taiwan history, the NMTH stands at the present and looking into the future for the public to share, write and feel the NMTH together.

As a national history museum committed to the research, preservation, exhibition, and promotion of Taiwan history, the NMTH mission include: 1. Develop the NMTH into a base of history research. 2. Preserve and maintain Taiwan’s historical and cultural assets. 3. Exhibit the history and culture of Taiwan society. 4. Promote the education of Taiwan history and culture.
