Establishment Purpose

• The rescue and excavation of the Peinan Site led to the planning and construction of the National Museum of Pre-history (NMP) occupying an area of about 11 hectares. As the first national museum in eastern Taiwan, the NMP has become a facility integrating museums, archeological sites, and ecological parks (Peinan Site Park) since its inauguration in 2002. The NMP has five exhibition halls, 15 exhibition galleries and 3 special exhibition galleries exhibiting archaeological artefacts discovered across Taiwan, the implements of early Austronesian peoples, and paleontological fossils found across Taiwan. In 2007 the NMP was planned and established in the archeological site in Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP). The site covers six cultural layers, including late Tapenkeng to Siraya, Ming, and Qing, dating back about 5,000-300 years. The ancient to modern Austronesia cultural layers are also found in the site. The trial run began at the end of 2018 to interpret archeological data with high-tech to present the cultural changes in the last 5,000 years on the southwestern plains. It is the first national professional archaeological facility in southwestern Taiwan.

Department Introduction

The NMP is established to inspire the public to understand more about the richesse and diversity of Taiwan’s natural ecology, prehistoric cultures, and indigenous cultures through the research, collection, exhibition, education, recreation functions of the museum, in order to encourage the public to value more and respect more the never-ending nature and cultural life of this land.
