Department Introduction
By setting its goal and development upon the art and cultural characteristics of Chiayi as the “the City of Paintings”, the museum hopes to plan exhibitions and art and cultural activities based on a contemporary vision to investigate and collate the art history of Chiayi, demonstrate the spirit of the city of paintings, pass down the past to the future, and let art engrain in the daily and culture through planning interdisciplinary international and domestic activities, hoping to enrich the cultural city contents of Chiayi. Under the leadership of Director Lai Yi-Hsin, the museum proposes multiple considerations covering collection and research, exhibition and education, and publication planning for the museum’s operations. The three main directions include: First, researches are conducted centering around the art history of Chiayi; second, explorations are initiated with contemporary artistry and interdisciplinary issues at the core; third, art and cultural activities across borders and local to Chiayi are bridged to usher in exchanges and various possibilities via artist-in-residence, exhibitions, and performances. The contents woven out with the three axes mentioned above shall braid essential contents orchestrated by Chiayi Art Museum, including exhibitions, performances, lectures, and seminars. By planning interdisciplinary exhibitions with a contemporary art vision, the above three directions will interweave and extend to become the important contents of all forms of exhibitions, performances, seminars, and conferences held by the museum. It is hoped that the art spirit and creation energy of Chiayi as “the City of Paintings” can link Chiayi and will be further disseminated to other cities in Taiwan and the world.
