Department Introduction

Since 1992, the Taipei Women’s Rescue Foundation has launched investigations into former Taiwanese "comfort women" and initiated compensation actions against Japan. Over the past 25 years, the foundation has accompanied the survivors, caring for their physical and mental well-being, and has preserved 5,042 related materials, including videos, books, and 730 artifacts. After 12 years of preparation and effort, the AMA Museum for Peace and Women’s Human Rights was inaugurated on March 8, 2016, and officially opened on December 10. The museum collects the life stories of 59 Taiwanese "comfort women" who, after enduring great suffering, forged lives of resilience. It is Taiwan’s first multifunctional social education center based on the "comfort women" human rights movement, integrating contemporary women’s rights issues and women's empowerment initiatives. On November 7, 2020, due to the impacts of the pandemic, financial difficulties, and the expiration of its lease, the AMA Museum in Dihua Street, Datong District, sadly announced its temporary closure. However, after more than a year of efforts and with the support of many friends and kind donors, the museum relocated to a new venue, also located in Datong District — one of Taipei's oldest and most historic areas, home to Dihua Street, the Confucius Temple, and Baoan Temple. Once a bustling center of commerce, Dadaocheng adds profound cultural and historical significance to the museum’s reopening. The new AMA Museum held a soft opening from October 27 to November 25, 2021, and officially reopened on November 26, 2021. The AMA Museum is committed to preserving historical memory while continuing to advocate for contemporary women’s human rights. It strives to help people transcend life’s traumas, inspire strength to move forward, and transform the scars of history into cornerstones of peace — working toward a future of respect, equality, and freedom from violence.
