Establishment Purpose

  • In cooperation with the reform of government organizations, the "921 Earthquake Museum of Taiwan" "Fonghuanggu Bird and Ecology Park" and " Chelungpu Fault Preservation Park" have become the three major dispatch centers of the museum as of January 1st, 2013. The "Nature and Science Education Park Management Center" coordinates the planning of exhibitions, education and leisure, research, operations and promotion of the three major parks, with plans to integrate important nature conservation and science education resources in Central Taiwan while exerting greater social education and cultural leisure functions.

Department Introduction

At 1:47 on the morning of September 21st, 1999, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 on the Richter scale occurred in Central Taiwan, causing massive casualties and property damage. It was one of the largest earthquakes in Taiwan during the past century. In order to remind the public to pay attention to earthquake prevention and relief measures, the government along with scholars and experts believe that the geomorphology of faults, the school buildings and uplifted riverbed at the base of Wufeng Township's Guangfu Junior High School are several prime choices with ideal conditions to have their landform kept completely intact. The current location of the Guangfu Junior High School was planned to be rebuilt into the "Earthquake Memorial Museum" to preserve the original site of the earthquake, serve as a record of the earthquake's historical facts, and provide actual educational materials for the public and schools on earthquake education. The place was officially named "The 921 Earthquake Museum of Taiwan" on February 13, 2001 to highlight its commemorative and educational significance.
