Department Introduction
The Taipei Film House used to be the residence of the Embassy of the United States. The government listed it as a Level 3 Historic Site in 1997 (now a Municipal Historic Site). After the work of the Taipei City Government Department of Cultural Affairs, the Taipei Film House received sponsorship from the TSMC Foundation for building renovation. The Taipei City Government contracted the Taipei Film House out to the Taiwan Film and Culture Association run by the famous director, Hou Hsiao-Hsien. The Association rearranged the area and created an art and cultural space of mixed use. Opening on November 10, 2002, the main business of the Taipei Film House is the SPOT Taipei Theater that plays art films. SPOT Taipei has over six films played daily and organizes themed film festivals. The film festival “P.O.P Cinema” was especially recognized by fans and people in different fields. Other facilities in the Taipei Film House include the Spot Café Lumière, Red Balloon Restaurant, and a cultural and creative store, SPOT Designs. The business goal of the Taipei Film House is to “combine the charm of a historic site and movies and change the place into a space where creativity can bloom”. The Taipei Film House would like to offer artists in the art, cultural, and creative industries a place to meet up and see what their creativity can turn into. Through activities such as film festivals, forums, and workshops, people from different fields can exchange their opinions, leading to the birth of more creative ideas. We hope the combination of a historic site and movies can help people find new inspiration. With the historical meaning of the historic site and the art of film, people can broaden their cultural horizons and cultivate culture depth.
