Establishment Purpose

  • Because of the Great Hanshin Earthquake registered magnitude 7.2 on the Richter scales on January 17, 1995, the earthquake left 6,430 dead, more than 40,000 injured, more than 510,000 houses partially or fully destroyed, it also caused private and public total property loss about 10 trillion yen. It's Japan's worst natural disaster next to the Isewan Typhoon after World War II. On July 10, 1995, the newly restructured Taipei City Fire Department started planning the construction of Taiwan's first fire safety museum to enhance the education of disaster prevention by providing citizens with virtual reality experiences of disasters; subsequently, people's disaster awareness will be raised. To make citizens understand the history and impact of various kinds of disasters, the Taipei City Fire Department has utilized computers, electronic and mechanical equipment to simulate the conditions of different disasters, citizens can make real practice at the museum. Therefore, the knowledge of fire prevention, flood, earthquake and typhoon preparedness can be naturally involved in daily lives. It's the way of "edutainment" that enhances the citizens' adaptability to disasters.
