Establishment Purpose

  • The Museum of Fiber Art Taichung was officially open to the public on October 17, 2018; it's Taichung City's first municipal museum and Taiwan's only one professional fiber-themed museum. We hope to integrate Taiwan's context of humanities and natural resources by taking existing artifact collections of the Han People, Taiwan's indigenous people, people from the region of Southwest China, and contemporary art as the bridge that connects creators of fiber as well as the platform of artifacts and craftsmanship. The museum has the vision to become a symbolic venue that carries on the culture and crafts of fiber art.

Department Introduction

The establishment purpose of Museum of Fiber Art Taichung is based on "fiber, fashion, green crafts" with upholding the 4 features of the museum, collection, research, exhibition, and education. The museum has mission to house the fiber artifacts that have the values of history, culture, and art and under the registration of cultural heritage, such as the relics of traditional Atayal's costumes “Lukus-kaxa” (the shell-bead clothes), the traditional crafts like Chinese silk tapestry kept by Huang Lan-ye and rush textile kept by Zhuzhou Gui-chun. Also, there is a total of about 1,200 pieces of important cultural relics housed in the museum. Also, the museum has the other mission of carrying forward the fiber art to the outside world. It's hoped to share the general public with abundant and profound humanities as well as the fiber crafts and cultural relics that feature beautiful shapes and characters; consequently, through innovation experiments, the conversation between crafts and art can be started, and traditional craftsmanship can be revived in the contemporary society with a new look.
