Department Introduction

The Xinwu Rice Story House used to be barns and a processing factories. The government built them for the storage of rice in the area in 1939. There are 7 buildings in total. The outer wall of it is made of bricks and colored with yellow mud and rice bran powder. The Japanese tile roof is retained. On the eaves you can see lions, bats and other mascots, wishing for having a good harvest in the year. The inner structure is mainly made of woods. The mortise and tenon techniques are applied on the pillars and stairs. They are in order and look beautiful. A huge and unique guage is painted on the wall for calculating the stock of rice. Since the cultural value of the buildings should be preserved, the Taoyuan County government listed the barns as historical buildings in October 2004. The Hakka Affairs Council, Agriculture and Food Agency and the County government provided the financial aid for the appearance renovation work and the space reuse plan. The current exhibition space was thus created. The buildings were renamed as the Rice Story House and opened in November of 2008.
