Department Introduction
The " Tsung-Yeh Arts and Cultural Center" in Madou, Tainan City, was originally the "Tsungyeh Factory" and "head office" of the Japanese Dai-Nippon Meiji Sugar Co., Ltd. It was closed in 1993. In 1999, the Tainan County Government officially announced that the Tsungyeh Red House Office, factory manager's dormitory, guest house, red-brick canteen, Japanese garden, and a group of camphor trees at an age of more than 100 years were a historic site of the county. The old locomotive used to transport sugarcane and the stones used to press and extract sugar in the production shop are conserved, too. With the rising awareness of "restoration and revitalization of historic sites" and "reuse of idle spaces", and the implementation of the "integrated community development policy" on the side of the government, this old sugar factory was transformed to the “Nanying Tsung-Yeh Arts and Cultural Center” and officially put into service in 2001. It finds its position as a center of workmanship and integrates special exhibitions, local culture halls, international artist villages, and rich resources of green zones. The Center has the functions to develop the aesthetics of arts and crafts and promote recreational tourism and education. It is also dedicated to connecting the academic resources of arts and culture in Tainan with community activities and further promote the networked and diverse cultural communication.
