Establishment Purpose

• To inspire the public to explore and understand more about the natural ecology, pre-historic culture, and Austronesia culture in southern Taiwan and urge the public to value and respect the non-stop natural and cultural life of Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP).

Department Introduction

The Museum of Archaeology, Tainan Branch of NMP originated from the development of the Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) in 1995, when a large quantity of the artifacts of different prehistoric periods were unearthed. The museum was thus established to re-present the 5000-year civilization of STSP. The National Science Council of the Executive Yuan has commissioned the Academia Sinica and the National Museum of Pre-history to investigate and excavate the area. So far, these two institutions have discovered over 58 sites where prehistoric cultures from 5,000 to 300 years ago are buried, making STSP the largest excavated area with the most densely distributed and most complete culture layers. To preserve, study and display the outcomes rescued and excavated from the development, through the concerted efforts of various parties, the project for building the Museum of Archaeology occupying a site area of 2.42 hectares and a floor area of 19,000 m2 was eventualy formed.
