Establishment Purpose

  • The Ke Qi-Hua House was built in 1965. In the architectural and decoration vocabulary, its exquisiteness is seen through its simplicity, such as the trimming of openings and the stair handrails. The original design style in the 1960s is preserved on the building’s façade. The large-area window with vertical shades demonstrates the function-oriented shape design concept. Although the house is not a historical building, as its user reflects the historical atmosphere and background of the time of use, i.e. the historical and cultural context of the building interwoven by the victim of pollical persecution and his family. In 2004 the Kaohsiung City Bureau of Cultural Affairs registered the house as a historical building in memory of this elite Taiwanese intellect suffering pollical persecution.

Department Introduction

As an enthusiastic and studious intellectual, Qi-Hua Ke devoted himself to education and the creation of literary works. However, he was wrongfully imprisoned for 17 years for political reasons. After his release, he threw himself into political movements and cultural activities, both witnessing and playing a part in another wave of change in Taiwan society. To commemorate the late Mr. Ke’s contribution to Taiwan, the Kaohsiung City government has transformed his former residence into a space for exhibition. Some furnishings are displayed with some letters and photos in their original settings in the house to bring forth the historical background: white Terror and human rights movement in Kaohsiung through a design based on Ke’s experience using situated interactive devices. With such, the Kaohsiung City Bureau of Cultural Affairs aims to present the progress of democracy development in Taiwan, commemorating this pioneer who was also an English grammarian, writer, and victim of political persecution.
