Department Introduction

The “Taiwu Military Dependents’ Village” is a village established in 1964 for garrisoning the armed forces and their families at the front line of Kinmen after the August 23rd Artillery Battle. This village is named after “Taiwu Mountain”, the landmark of Kinmen. There are a total of 25 two-story confined masonry buildings constructed in this village. Each building consists of four housing units, which is 100 housing in total. These Class A housing units are reserved for officers ranked above (inclusive) Major of the Ministry of National Defense. There are seven buildings, 28 housing units in total still standing in the village today, which were registered to be preserved as a historic site in 2009. The Taiwu Military Dependents’ Village was built during the campaign of raising funds for constructing military housing. It was a peak period of military village construction in Taiwan. The pattern of the modern houses can be seen through the emphasis on the economical and practical purposes of the building. The unique form of the detached house in Taiwu Military Dependents’ Village represents the modernized military housing for general-rank officers and their families in the 1960sin comparison with other military villages constructed in the same period. This can also reflect the valuable insights and uniqueness of changes in Taiwanese housing history after World War II. Currently, the whole district of the Taiwu Military Dependents’ Village is planned to be a part of the Military Dependents’ Village Cultural and Creative Park, and is undergoing restoration work on the housing and scenery. After the restoration, the No. 21 housing will then be used as the story house of the August 23rd Artillery Battle.
