Department Introduction
To commemorate Dr. Sun Yat-Sen’s devotion to national development and impeccable legacy, the government inaugurate the construction of a memorial hall in 1964. Through the international architectural design competition, celebrated architect Da-Hong Wang won the bidding and began to design a memorial hall that integrates traditional and modern architectural characteristics. The hall was completed and its service to the public began in 1972.
The memorial hall was previously under the jurisdiction of the Taipei City Government. In 1986, it was re-assigned to the Ministry of Education. In 2012, it was further assigned to the Ministry of Culture after the government’s organizational reengineering. Aiming to exhibit the artifacts and documentation of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, and promoting art and cultural activities, the Memorial Hall is composed of a performance hall, the Chungshan National Gallery, the auditorium, Chungshan Lecture Hall, Chungshan Library, Living Aesthetics Classroom, and other facilities.
Upholding the vision of “fraternity” and mission of “service”, the Memorial Hall has been increasing the number of art and cultural activities. In the meantime, it has enhanced academic research to keep up with societal development, so as to link the historical memories of land and people, develop local culture, rendering it a memorial hall that embodies fraternity and heritage as well as a place for sharing happiness and beautiful art and culture.
